Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Covered by MSP in BC?

If you’ve been putting off pelvic floor physiotherapy because of cost, you’re not alone. It’s one of the first questions people ask  and the answer depends on your specific situation. Here’s a clear breakdown of what MSP covers, who qualifies, and what your options are if you don’t.

The Short Answer

Standard MSP does not cover physiotherapy for most BC residents. However, if you qualify for MSP Supplementary Benefits, you may be eligible for partial coverage,  including for pelvic floor physiotherapy.

Who Qualifies for MSP Supplementary Benefits?

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, you can check your eligibility through the BC government website. MSP Supplementary Benefits are available to lower-income BC residents. You may qualify if:

  • You receive Income Assistance or Disability Assistance
  • You are a convention refugee
  • You receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement as an older adult in long-term care

What Does MSP Actually Cover?

If you qualify for Supplementary Benefits, MSP contributes a partial amount per physiotherapy visit, up to a combined limit of 10 visits per calendar year. This limit is shared across physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, naturopathy, and surgical podiatry so it’s worth planning how you use it. You are responsible for any session cost above the MSP contribution.

What If I Don’t Qualify for MSP?

At Revibe Physio & Rehab, we can help you understand your coverage options when you book. You don’t need to figure it out before your first appointment. Most patients in BC pay for physiotherapy through one of the following:

  • Extended health benefits through an employer or private plan
  • ICBC, if your pelvic floor symptoms are related to a motor vehicle accident
  • WorkSafeBC (WCB), if they’re related to a workplace injury
  • Out of pocket, which is common and straightforward to arrange

Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Worth It Without Full Coverage?

For most people, yes. Pelvic floor issues whether it’s leakage, pelvic pain, or postpartum recovery  tend to get worse when left untreated, not better. A focused course of treatment is often shorter than people expect, and the long-term benefit of resolving these symptoms far outweighs the cost of a few sessions.
